There were two retrofit oil tank kits available for earlier Sportster models. The oil tank will retrofit Click on any pic below to all 1982 to 1993 Sportster models, except the XR-1000. \\ |
All earlier tanks were obsoleted and replaced with these two kits. enlarge: \\ |

Corrected part numbers per TT-37: |
* The 1982 oil tank is the last year tank with a drain plug. Future year tanks had a drain hose plugged off elsewhere. \\ |
It had a different, 2-E1987 piece chain guard so you could remove the front part to get at the drain plug. (62482(83XLX of the XLFORUM https://www.xlforum.net/forum/sportster-motorcycle-forum/sportster-motorcycle-era-specific-and-model-specific/ironhead-sportster-motorcycle-talk-1957-1985/144378-85-93) withflared brake lines. |

Starting in 82, the starter relay (6247231506-9379B) is attached to the rear of the oil tank with banjo brake linesa #10-24 x 3/8" hex head screw and star washer. \\ |
