-|Dick Obrien, HDs racing manager, retired in 1983. According to the April, 1985 issue of Cycle World magazine, the MoCo was experiencing company wide economic problems. The racing team lost it's star rider, Randy Goss, who quit the Harley team to ride a Honda instead. Factory racers, Scott Parker and Jay Springsteen, accepted salary cuts and and the loss of their factory racing department mechanics. So the 1985 plan was to supply Springsteen and Parker with motorcycles, parts and cash but mechanics and logistics were left up to the riders to pay for. Scott Parker hired Tex Peel to prepare his bikes who said "This year, we'll win races in spite of Harley Davidson, not because of them" HD increased the price of their T-shirts in which the dealer network agreed to charge 50 cents more per shirt to raise more money for the racing department which was expected to generate an additional $600,000 in revenue.+|
